This is one of the most popular dish of North Canara, a traditional Konkani Sambar. My Aayi is a specialist in cooking this.This is my favorite curry.

Ingredients :
1. Toor Daal 1/2 cup
2. Grated coconut 1/2 cup
3. Channa Daal 2 tspns
4. Coriander seeds 2 tspns
5. Mustard seeds 1 tspn
6. Cumin seeds 1 tspn
7. Methi seeds 1/2 tspn
8. Asafoetida a pinch
9. Curry leaves
10. Cinnamon(Optional) 1/2 inch piece
11. Cloves(Optional) 5-6
12. Red chilies 5-6
13. Vegetables – Beans, Carrot, Cauli flower, tomato, potato, drumsticks
14. Oil 2 tspns
15. Coriander leaves
16. Turmeric powder

Cook Daal with little turmeric and 2 drops of oil (tumeric and oil help daal to cook early). Cook vegetables separately. Heat 1 tspn oil and fry Ingredients from Channa Daal to Red chillies. Add coconut and fry for 2-3 minutes. Grind to a thin paste. Heat cooked daal, add vegetables, ground masala and salt.Heat for 5-10 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves. Heat 1tspn oil. Add mustard seeds, when they start to splutter, add curry leaves. Add this seasoning to the cooked sambar. Serve hot with rice.
